Do you have older loved ones is in their own home alone during this pandemic? Below are some things to consider:
Has life changed for them due to the stay at home order? If they weren’t getting out much before and didn’t drive than they may be used to being home alone. Think about what is different for them now and how you can ensure they feel safe. Talk to them via phone often to ask how they are and if they need anything.
If they do drive, suggest they stay home and allow others to you pick up groceries for them. Or suggest that you order them and have them delivered. Staying away from others is important during this time of social distancing.
Prescriptions can also be picked up or delivered.
Do they have any appointments doctor or otherwise coming up? Are they critical?
Make sure they are aware there is an increase in scams. Ask if they are letting their calls go to voicemail if they don’t recognize the caller (a good practice). Also, ask them if anyone has come up to door. Inquire what they would do if someone did knock at the door?
Think about technology that could improve your communication or prevent isolation. Best Buy can help you understand some new products to keep your older adult safe and engaged.
Did those that did help, now have other priorities such as a nurse in the family now working extra hours? Home care agencies are available to help with med set ups or housekeeping or cooking if those that did do those things aren’t available.
