Residential Care or Nursing Home?

Today in this time of COVID-19, a residential home can be a great option for care for a loved one.  Many times when Choice Connections receives a  call, the first thing we hear is that they are looking for a nursing home for a loved one.  Once we ask several questions, we can explain all the options.  We can also explain why one may require a skilled nursing home.    There are many choices of options today. Residential care homes are  a good alternative to a nursing home.    There is less risk of illness such as COVID-19 with a smaller setting.

What is a Residential Care Home?

This care option is licensed just like assisted living is licensed by the state and holds a comprehensive license.   They are required to have an registered nurse on staff and comply with Department of Health regulations.

In this setting, typically there are six residents in a home within a residential neighborhood.  Each resident often has a private room but sometimes if funds are limited or a person is on Medical Assistance they may choose a shared room.     Keep in mind, their room is mainly for sleeping and they are enjoying other parts of the home the rest of the day just as you experience in your home.

What are the Benefits of a Residential Care Home?

  1. The largest benefit is the high level of care due to high staffing ratios.  Typically, a 1-3 ratio during the day and evening and 1 to 6 over night.
  2. Care is more personal.  For example, they are able to incorporate favorite meals into the menu.
  3. Staff is more consistent and you get to know them well.  It’s like an extended family.
  4. You know the manager/business owner and can talk with them and the RN easily about your loved one’s needs.
